ENThe book commemorates docent (associated professor) Jonas Sokolovas, a prominent Lithuanian educator, bibliopfile and poet. He was bom on 5 (18) February 1892 in Vladimir, Russia. As an appraisal of his performance as a pupil in Shuya Gymnasium of Vladimir Province he was awarded a silver medal and in 1916 he graduated from the History and Philology Faculty of the Imperial Moscow University. Among his teachers were such famous professors as M. Speranskiy, A. Orlov, D. Ushakov and others. While in Russia, Sokolovas worked as a schoolteacher of Russian language and literature as well as the Latin and Greek languages. After the 1917 October Revolution, apparently because of political circumstances, he came to Lithuania. From 1919 Sokolovas was engaged as a librarian at the People’s Education Commissariat in Vilnius and at the Lithuanian Education Ministry in Kaimas and later in autumn of that year he was sent to Panevėžys where up to 1940 he had taught in various secondary schools of the town. During that period, namely in 1929, Sokolovas completed the extended course for qualified teachers in Lithuanian language and literature. In the same year he was granted the Lithuanian citizenship.For some three decades (1919-1951) Sokolovas, tutoring and lecturing at Panevėžys and Vilnius secondary schools, Vilnius Pedagogical Institue, Vilnius University and Vilnius Library School, not only educated hundreds of Lithuanian children and youth, enriching their knowledge in literature and philosophy, but also spread the light of intellect. No wonder that after so many years the teacher is still remembered with gratitude by his former pupils: professor of medicine S. Pavilonis, lecturers docents Leonas Valkūnas, Rimantas Sideravičius, Vytautas Čibiras, architects Algimantas and Vytautas Nasvytis, writer Rapolas Šaltenis and many others. Each of them points to their teacher’s high level of erudition, comprehensive knowledge in literature, especially of Russian, his very distinctive and fascinating way and style of tuition. The book comprises two main parts: the first one describes Sokolovas as an individual, acquaints with his principal works, contains memoirs, pictures and documents related to him. In the second part, verses, articles and letters by Sokolovas are presented. Jonas Sokolovas belongs to the notable group of people of non-Lithuanian ethnical origin, each of them having chosen to devote entire conscious life to Lithuania, considering it their second homeland.
