Summary / Abstract:

Reikšminiai žodžiai: Archeologiniai tyrinėjimai; Interpretavimas; Katedra; Perkūno šventykla; Rivijaus kronika; T. ENDuring the investigation of the subdistrict of the Vilnius Cathedral in 1984-1986, mosaic fragments were discovered, which are supposed to have been the remains of the Perkūnas temple described by T. Narbutas. The publication of T. Narbutas' source about this sanctuary has long been considered a falsification. The article is intended to deal with the existence of the Perkūnas temple in Vilnius. A negative attitude to the historical research remained in post-war historiography, and some cling to this opinion even now. However, R. Šalūga has proven in 1959 that the Bychovc Chronicle is not fictitious and in fact a source that existed. M. Strijkovskis used this source or at least its information. The 1971 chronicle is published in Lithuanian with comments by R. Jasas. After there was again trust towards Narbutas' works, the most interest was regarding the Perkūnas temple: everything is described in detail, however, those details and the author still create distrust. Many current historians still consider it to be the creation of Narbutas, however, archaeological research has confirmed some of the places mentioned in the Chronicle of the ceremonial presence. There is written that there have been 12 steps, each one is designed for any of the Zodiac signs. Only 6 steps remain. The other part was destroyed by later constructions. The remaining part of it shows that there is a possibility of 12 stairs. Information also matches the altar and the stairs of the temple. Hence, Vilnius Cathedral tests again showed that the archaeological data not only adds to the historical knowledge but can also contribute to a better understanding of the written sources.
