Summary / Abstract:

ENThe spiritual world of Lithuanians exiled to Siberia during the Soviet occupation, preservation of the Lithuanian identity, and the activities of Lithuanian Diasporas in Krasnoyarsk Region is a monument testifying to humanity. The material for the present article resulted from the personal experience, contacts and conversations with Lithuanian exiles, as well as the evaluations of summer touring schools conducted through Lithuanian culture, the history and the Lithuanian language studies, thoughts derived from meetings with the clergy, and compatriot memories. Based on this material, juxtaposition of human dignity, spiritual and physical genocide, and inhumanity entrenched through terrible violence are exposed. Specific facts confirm the role of exiles' spiritual strength as an outcome of education, which becomes particularly obvious in brutal life situations. Tlie efforts to enrich the exile environment with the spirituality of Lithuanian culture, which is being gradually introduced through distinctive traditions and religion deepening youth spirituality, and the consideration for the Lithuanian language and history arc appreciated. A comparison drawn between the exile environment and manifestations of Lithuanian culture in exile demonstrates major differences in the spirituality of education in various cultures and societies. At the same time, the spirituality of education as a culturally determined and politically adjustable phenomenon is endorsed.Discussions on human tortures and massacres in the camps in Siberia and limits on civil rights and liberties arc presented and supported by the descriptions of terrible exile locations and instruments of human destruction. Despite such a violent past, the Lithuanian spirit and values have not decayed. Exiles from the present- day generation establish societies, try to revive their religion, maintain relations with Lithuania, put up monuments on massacre sites and take care of the burial grounds. The painful fate of exiles and their children, especially the culture of the growing youth, confirms the significance of the spirituality of the environment and a need for deepening personal spirituality in it. Experience has shown that it allows not only introduction but also the spread and entrenchment of Lithuanian culture among young people. It is also important in a broader sense; despite the fact that human and environmental interdependence in exile is the reality determined by history and culture foreign to a Lithuanian, the universal aspiration to enhance spirituality in the human world through education still persists. It is a highly demanding task. Activity enthusiasts are invited to rise up by the slogan, "Since we were Lithuanian born, we shall be Lithuanians". The above are the thoughts that arise recoiling upon the exile history and spirituality of Lithuanians off the shores at the Yenisei. [From the publication]
