ENProfessor Jakub Mowszowicz (1903-1983) was known to Lithuanian botanists as the author of many scientific works. A few Lithuanian scientists remember him as a colleague and friend. One half of his life the professor spent in his homeland Lithuania, and the other half in Poland. J. Mowszowicz's activities are invaluable for the investigation of the Lithuanian plant and fungi diversity. His great study "Conspectus Florae Vilnensis" presents botanical data from the region of Vilnius. By choosing botany as his profession the young Jankel Mowszowicz disappointed his parents who had hoped their son to become a physician or an attorney, both being traditional Jewish occupations. As Jankel did not receive any salary for working at the Department of Plants his parents expelled him from home and refused to provide any financial support. Having left for Poland, J. Mowszowicz organized scientific activities in all the fields of natural science at the University of Lodž. He supervised 258 master and 14 doctoral students, published over 800 articles and other works. His recommendations on medicinal herbs and ecology are well-known in Poland, however in Lithuania his name is known only to former colleagues or botanists. The Jewish Community of Lithuania and Lithuanian scientists should make a greater effort to commemorate this prominent Litvak scientist. [From the publication]
