Summary / Abstract:

ENThe article presents a critical analysis of the development of the concept of resistance in psychopathology. The historical context of resistance studies is briefly reviewed and the terms and definitions are discussed. Two stages in the development of research on resistance are distinguished and the theoretical principles underlying the research are shown. Finally, the basic problems with the concept of resistance are examined: multidimensionality, instability, the validity of the notion, and the concept of protective factors. Despite the highlighted problems of this concept, it is valuable for understanding positive development under unfavourable circumstances. The concept of resistance allows taking a broader perspective on the process of development and has important implications for intervention. On the other hand, many questions remain regarding how, when and why resistance processes take place. Further research is required to answer these questions.
