"A Battle between the Duchy and the Kingdom": remarks on the Orzechowski vs. rotundus controversy on the Polish-Lithuanian Union in 1564-66

LTStraipsnyje nagrinėjama dviejų humanistų – Stanislovo Ožechovskio ir Augustino Rotundo diskusija, vykusi Liublino unijos išvakarėse (1564-66). Šių autorių polemika vienu svarbiausių to meto klausimu atspindi aukštą tuometinių politinių diskusijų lygį. Atliktame tyrime apibūdinami Ožechovskio ir Rotundo požiūriai ir jų skirtumai, dėmesys skiriamas abiejų intelektualų „laisvės“ ir „unijos“ sampratai, taip pat pristatomos kultūrinės aplinkybės, kuriose susiformavo nagrinėjamos pozicijos. Pažymima, jog abu autoriai naudojo tą patį politinį žodyną bei turėjo panašias klasikinių tekstų žinias. Išanalizuota diskusija leido įdėmiai pažvelgti į politinę komunikaciją tarp Lenkijos ir Lietuvos Didžiosios Kunigaikštystės prieš Liublino uniją. Ožechovskio teigimu, Lenkija ir LDK atstovavo dvi skirtingas valstybines tradicijas, todėl jų sąjunga buvo neįmanoma. Sudarant uniją, Ožechovskio manymu, Lietuvos didysis kunigaikštis turėtų atsisakyti titulo ir perduoti tėvonines teises Lenkijai; sudariusi uniją su Lenkija, Lietuva taptų išlaisvinta. Vadinasi, Ožechovskio pažiūros buvo artimos „maksimalistų“, reikalavusių prijungti Lietuvą prie Lenkijos, pažiūromis. Visiškai kitokios pozicijos laikėsi Rotundas: jis pripažino Lietuvos krikšto priėmimo iš Lenkijos svarbą ir gerbė istorinius Lenkijos ir Lietuvos ryšius, tačiau įtariai žiūrėjo į uniją, kurioje Lenkija turėtų dominuojančią poziciją. A. Rotundo manymu, unija su Lenkija turėjo vykti ne dvejų politinių tautų sujungimo į vieną, bet jų ryšių stiprinimo principu.

ENThe article analyses the discussion between two humanists - Stanislaw Orzechowski and Augustinus Rotundus - that took place on the eve of the Union of Lublin (1564-1566). The discussion between these two authors regarding one of the most important issues of that time reflects the high level of political debate of said period. The study investigates Orzechowski's and Rotundus' views and their differences, focuses on the concepts of "freedom" and "unity" as understood by both intellectuals, as well as introduces the cultural context in which the positions in question were formed. It is noted that both authors used the same political dictionary and were knowledgeable about similar classical texts. The analysed discussion allowed for a closer look at the political communication between Poland and the Grand Duchy of Lithuania before the Union of Lublin. According to Orzechowski, Poland and the Grand Duchy of Lithuania represented two different national traditions, so their union was impossible. Orzechowski believed that by establishing the union the Grand Duke of Lithuania should refuse his title and transfer hereditary rights to Poland; after forming the union with Poland, Lithuania would become liberated. Consequently, Orzechowski's views were close to those of the "maximalists" who demanded for Lithuania to be connected to Poland.A completely different position was maintained by Rotundus: he acknowledged the importance of accepting Lithuanian baptism from Poland, and respected the historic relations between Poland and Lithuania, but he was suspicious about the union in which Poland would have had a dominant position. Rotundus thought that the union with Poland should have taken place not on the principle of connecting two political nations into one, but of strengthening of their ties.
