Summary / Abstract:

LTKnygoje „1656 m. Vilniaus sutartis: Rytų Europos krizė ir Ukraina XVII a. viduryje“ nagrinėjamos derybos tarp Rusijos ir Abiejų Tautų Respublikos, kurios tarpininkaujant Austrijai įvyko Nemėžyje prie Vilniaus 1656 m. rugpjūčio 22 d. – lapkričio 3 dieną. Knygoje detaliai pristatoma XVII a. tarptautinė politika, Europos diplomatijos tendencijos bei Ukrainos užsienio politika.

ENNegotiations between Russia and the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth which took place in Nemėžis near Vilnius on 22 August – 3 November 1656 with Austria as an intermediator are analysed in the book “The Treaty of Vilnius, 1656: The East European Crisis and Ukraine in the Mid–Seventeenth Century”. The book contains a detailed presentation of the politics of the 17th century, the tendencies of the European diplomacy and the Ukrainian foreign policy. Special attention is paid to the activities of the countries that intermediated during the negotiations between the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth and Sweden in 1655–1656. These negotiations became an alternative for the Polish–Russian negotiations. In accordance with the reports of Russian, Polish, Lithuanian, Austrian and other participants of the negotiations, the development of the process of the analysed negotiations is presented in the book. The subjects and issues that caused violent disputes (e.g. conditions for the union against Sweden, new boarders between Russia and the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth, religious problems, etc.) are also discussed. In summary, it can be said that negotiations were taking place while Europe, which was being shaken by revolutions, was waking up for a new life. In the old continent, geographical centres started strengthening with their possessed recourses ensuring successful farming development and the growth of political power. The struggle of the greatest powers while seeking to overwhelm those centres had fatal influence on the states that were trying to anchor on the world map. The Baltic Sea region was one of those regions where the interests of many countries crossed and which became the epicenter of the processes described in the book.
