LTApžvelgiami miesto įvaizdžio tyrimai, pateikiama tokių tyrimų metodika ir vertinamas jos taikymo tikslingumas. Pateikti atliktų bandomųjų miesto įvaizdžio tyrimų rezultatai, pagrindinį dėmesį skiriant Vilniaus miesto įvaizdžio palyginimui su kitiems Europos miestams priskiriamomis charakteristikomis. ENThe aim of the article is to overview investigation of the image of the city, its principles, methodology and expediency as well as to present the results of a trial research that was carried out during September of 2002 in two groups of respondents: 1) from Southern Europe (Italy, Germany, Romania, Slovenia) and 2) from Northern Europe (Lithuania, Poland, Russia, Finland). The present investigation of the image of the city is interesting first of all because of possibility to compare qualities and characteristics of Vilnius to those of other European cities. Secondly, the investigation is important as a tool for city planners and managers while capturing perception on the city by its inhabitants and thereby giving a chance to plan and organize the city in a better way corresponding to their needs. The term “image” can be understood as a view (physical similarity to some other object seen by an observer) or as an intellectual sign or illustration (the term “symbol” or “metaphorical description” is close to the meaning). While analysing the image of the city there are two meanings of the „image" that are most important: 1) Mental perception of the essence of the city created by any single individual when directly or indirectly colliding with the city and its environment; 2) Countless existing and distant images of the city that were created while often or constantly contacting with the environment of the city. Only part of those is stored in the memory of an observer. It must be said that only fragments of the image of the city while the total view of the location is broader than the senses of an individual are able to capture. [...]. [Text from author]
