Summary / Abstract:

ENThe object of the article is a selection of seven contemporary texts of Lithuanian literature: Jurga Ivanauskaitė’s novels Mėnulio vaikai [‘The Moon’s Children’] (1989), Pragaro sodai [‘Hell’s Gardens’] (1992), Ragana ir lietus [‘The Witch and the Rain’] (1993), Agnijos magija [‘Agnija’s Magic’] (1995), Sapnų nublokšti [‘Bowled over by Dreams’] (2000), Placebas [‘The Placebo’] (2003), and Miegančių drugelių tvirtovė [‘The Fortress of the Dormant Moths’] (2006). These literary texts of J. Ivanauskaitė, which span almost two decades of Lithuanian literature, are analysed as examples of the contemporary Lithuanian novel, as feminist texts and as representatives of “Lithuanian social reality”. The article seeks to detect post-modernist and feminist discourse in the novels of Jurga Ivanauskaitė. Analysing the possibilities of the feminist and post-modernist novel, and its functioning in discourse, at every juncture some property of the novel is focused on as its essential feature, a generic representative of the whole phenomenon. Post-modern discourse in J. Ivanauskaitė’s novels is not effected as conceptual, it can only be talked about as discrete signs of post-modernist writing (using post-modern narration, technical elements, post-modern construction of time and space, etc.) and post-modernist treatment of the body. The anti-realisation of feminist discourse in the novels of Jurga Ivanauskaitė opens the door to analysis of images of women and interpretation of gender relations. In the earliest novels analysed, women are depicted as sex objects, creatures, the female of the species. The novels of J. Ivanauskaitė reveal a sad truth: in novels, women do not exist for themselves, they exist for men. In the novels of J. Ivanauskaitė, post-modernist and feminist discourse is not realised as an episteme.
