Summary / Abstract:

ENThe issue of the life of children during the deportations by the Soviet regime has attracted little academic attention so far. In the history of Gulag, the focus of Soviet repressive authorities was rarely placed on children. Their fate usually coincided with the fate of their families – they were considered “enemies of the socialistic state”. The historian researching deportations of children in the Soviet Union was shocked with the scopes of the crimes. Usually, sufferings of children are used as a brutal illustration and accusation of the Stalinist system. They are attributed to collective texts of sufferings. However, individual voices of children are rarely heard among other victims of the Soviet regime. The uniqueness of children’s experience, i.e. the fact that they faced deportations when very young and not integrated into their native community, encourages the author to distinguish them among other groups of victims and analyse their experiences. The identities and virtues of children in exile were less purified than those of their adult relatives. The most vulnerable groups of victims, i.e. deported children, serve as an important object of the research seeking to find out the way deportations determine social behaviour, psychology and values of the modern society. One of the statements of this article is that children should not be regarded as innocent victims of the totalitarian states, but as a legitimised social factor. Over the period from 1941 to 1951, 30700 children under 18 years of age were deported from Lithuania. The article aims to analyse their fate in exile and the relation between deportation and ethnicity.
