Summary / Abstract:

ENThe article was written in an effort to offer a new style of semiotic resistance to the nationally established and sanctified Lithuanian nationalism, to meanings that consciously or unconsciously control our behaviour and words. This project not only rejects the dominating official and universally accepted meaning but also constructs an opposite meaning to relate to “a secretive polyvalent nature of nationality” and to break free from powerful and monumental national archetypes. The author aims at providing a general description of such aspects of the Lithuanian society that are not only ideologized but also pathological and ugly, and to make us fathom this out. Even if the invisible bottom of Lithuania as of any other nation cannot be fully fathomed (national mythologists claim that nations are fathomless and that spirit of a nation is too deep to actually penetrate it), the one who dares will see their reflection hidden in the abyss of both the national fantasy and national reality. A double interaction between the hard bottom of reality and mysteriously infinite and soft bottom of the national imagination makes us believe that universal or unchanging characteristics of the national identity don’t exist; by deconstructing and reconstructing our national subjectivity which was created by both a utopic area of the national identity and cynical and practical national identification we resist dominating mythologies that serve us in maintaining certain systems of powerful relations.
