Summary / Abstract:

LTStraipsnyje nagrinėjama kolaboravimo problema Lietuvoje Antrojo pasaulinio karo metais. Reikšminiai žodžiai: 1941-1945; Antrasis pasaulinis karas, 1939-1945 (World War II); Bendradarbiavimas; Holokaustas; Kolaboravimas; Koloboravimas; Lietuvių savivalda; Nacionalizmas; Vokiečių okupacija; Vokiečių okupacija; 1941-1945; Collaboration; German occupation; Holocaust; Lithuania; Lithuanian self-government; Nationalism; Nazi regime; Second World War; WWII.

ENThe article analyses the issue of collaboration in Lithuania during WWII. The author notes that an extensive analysis of the German occupation is not possible with a research into collaboration, since only with the help of local residents could the Germans occupants control the occupied territories and avoid any disturbances. The author discusses the term "collaboration" and notes that this term gained its negative connotation only after WWII. The author also notes that although he disagrees with this connotation, this disagreement is useless. The Vichy regime in France as the classical case of collaboration, when all the key Vichy groups decided to collaborate with the Germans, is discussed. The author claims that this example of France demonstrates the relation of various forms of nationalism with the collaboration with the Germans, The attitude of the historian A. Armstrong, according to which nationalism and collaboration are not oppositions, is analysed, and the relation of collaboration to ethnic nationalism revealed by this scientist is demonstrated. The author notes that the discrimination of national minorities started before WWII, and the German occupation was only a more radical expression of it. When discussing the situation in Lithuania, the author claims that the initiators of the Holocaust were the Germans, however, they could not fulfil everything without Lithuanian assistance. According to the author, this could be evidenced by the fact Jews were massacred in those places where they had no contacts with Germans. The author concludes that the Holocaust in Lithuania was determined by the Germans as well as Lithuanian politics, since the nationalism was closely related to the radical anti-Semitism.
