Summary / Abstract:

ENThis paper examines philosophical self-reflective interpolations of Kavolis’ sociology. Kavolis juxtaposed the notion of personality with civilisation as such and with different civilisations, situating the assumptions of his own thinking in the theoretical meta-context, i. e. in relation to other, different frames of thought, expanding on their common grounds and on differences between them. Kavolis held that the loss of the symbolic ‘soil’ and of the belief that the ‘I’ belongs to a whole of self-evident values was fatal to his generation of exiles. The situation of exile sharpens the experience of the modern human being, opening to experience fundamental structures of existence. This paper shows that Kavolis does not derive self-consciousness from the theoretical understanding of reality but, instead, from the realm of passions. For Kavolis, consciousness and existential maturity are linked with the loss of illusions and the experience of pain. The existentialist notion of freedom, directly relevant to Kavolis’ philosophical thought, represents nature as nothingness, a nothingness that discovers itself to consciousness but does not guarantee authentic self-perception. Yet out of this Sartrean nothingness emerge personal responsibilities, determining existential frames, and by that ephemeral human existence gains substance. The unnaturalisation of existence brings a sense of uncertainty about reality. Juxtaposing his own search for reality with that of Descartes, Kavolis claims that modern consciousness is characterised by its reliance on fundamental existential grounds: I feel pain [I am in pain], therefore I am.The second move in the path to the real is empathy: pain is intersubjective by nature. Kavolis thought of self-reflection and self-creation as embedded in the process of contemplating and generating symbolic resources of a community, the resources that are needed to understand the meaning of one’s own and community’s exist-ence. This is the condition for a community to be: human relationships, dependences and commitments are consciously instated and sustained by personal effort. However, the relationship with the object of faith as with a ‘meaningful illusion’ includes a possibility of negation. Next to the fully realised possibility of involvement and responsibility, there is always the other way open: of being absolutely free from it, of returning to the negative freedom devoid of values, bonds, and commitments.
