Summary / Abstract:

Reikšminiai žodžiai: Integracija į Europos Sąjungą; Integracijos procesas; Lietuvos žemės ir maisto ūkis; Lietuvos žemės ūkis; Maisto pramonė; Prioritetinės žemės ir maisto ūkio veiklos; Rinka; Food industry; Integration into European Union; Integration process; Lithuanian agriculture; Lithuanian's agriculture and food sector; Market; Priority of the agriculture and food sector.

ENThe article analyses achievements of Lithuanian agriculture and food industry when preparing for the EU integration. The work reviews and specifies measures necessary to apply when seeking to increase the competitiveness of the agriculture and food industry. The current situation of the Lithuanian agriculture and food industry is evaluated, and the main problems of separate economy sectors as well as common problems of the agriculture industry are highlighted. EU membership is a historical opportunity for Lithuania, its agriculture and food industry to deal with the backlog determined by our geopolitical situation. The main aim of Lithuania is to improve its production quality, increase its competitiveness and to withstand the EU food competition. Therefore, it is necessary to modernise and restructure the Lithuanian agriculture and food industry. The diary industry has been highlighted in the Lithuania agriculture development strategy as the priority sector. Therefore, after joining the EU, the diary industry will be the object of more attention and financial support. It is necessary to encourage the cooperation between manufacturers and recyclers, improve the quality of diary products, support the development of production of biologically valuable products, support manufacturers of diary products by applying direct and indirect export dotations. The second important Lithuanian sector is the meat sector. Lithuania has to modernise the livestock and poultry industries, improve the quality of cattle and pork. It is necessary to increase the productiveness of livestock and introduce new livestock raising technologies.
