Summary / Abstract:

ENThe Catholic Church has always looked after science. The institutions of science were under the wardship of it as well. In prewar Lithuania the Catholic Church paid attention mostly at the upbringin of people with the help of all kind of Catholic organizations, seminaries and the faculty of Theology-Philosophy. The constitution of Lithuania and the Concordat signed by Lithuania and Vatican vouched for the Catholic activities. Later on the members of the National party of Lithuania started to govern the state and they limited the action of the Catholic Church. They limited the activity of the faculty of Theology-Philosophy and ignored the rights of Catholics who were the majority in Lithuania (about 85%). The intellectuals of Lithuania decided to form the Catholic University separately. On the eve of inauguration everything was prepared and coordinated by Vatican and the government of Lithuania: material conditions, the professorate and the statute. Inspite of the fact that the government forbade to inaugurate at the University, M. Reinys at the head of the rectorate of the University looked after the public education. The history of the Catholic University showed the resolutions and political consciousnes of the intellectuals in Lithuania. [From the publication]
