Summary / Abstract:

ENThis article seeks to remind the reader of the problematics related to the mythical tale Eglė the Queen of Serpents and to deal with the available versions of its analysis. By deconstructing the metaphors, the author attempts to reveal the actual relations plausibly having existed in the archaic society (i.e. to grasp the "text" of life through the work of "art"), and to suggest a conceptual explanation of the enigmatic conflict. The latter is elucidated in the presented version as a cardinal confrontation between men and women over the issue of controls over life and death and consequently, over the priorities of the ideological power, which ends tragically for one of the parties involved, simultaneously causing essential shift in the worldview and transformation of the cultural pattern. The tale thus is presented as a myth describing cardinal conflict, significant not only to our knowledge of Lithuanian or Baltic, but to the human pre-history in general. [From the publication]
