ENIn an interview with Dr Darius Staliūnas, a historian researching the memory of the 1863-1864 uprising, he explains how the uprising is viewed by historians in Lithuania and how its memory is shaped in the communication of politicians. The discussion focuses on the changing meanings of the uprising in modern Lithuanian historiography, state and regional memorial policy, and the activities of local historians from the interwar period to the present day. It discusses the changed emotional relationship of the public to this event, following the discovery and ceremonial burial of the remains of the murdered rebels (and their leaders) in 2017 on Vilnius Gediminas Hill and the outbreak of a large-scale war in Ukraine by Russia in 2022. According to the historian, the memory of the uprising was for a long time “cold,” i.e., it did not move Lithuanians like the struggles for independence in the 20th century or the post-war resistance. However, this relationship has changed in recent years, and the uprising has become a significant place of memory in Lithuania. Historians debate the impact of the uprising on the development of modern Lithuanian identity.
