Summary / Abstract:

ENThe article focuses on the beginning of the 9th decade of the 19th c. when the wave of unprecedented pogroms surged through Southern Russia (and also Ukraine). The attempt is made to sort out whether pogroms happened in the North West region, which factors prompted the intensification of the ethnic tensions and their transformation into pogroms as well as to indicate what could have caused the collective violence on a relatively small scale. In the beginning of the 9th decade of the 19th c. the conflicts between Christians and Jews intensified. Often the two-person quarrels that would arise in a marketplace, would soon divide the onlookers into two conflicting camps on the ethnoconfessional basis. For Lithuanian peasants a Jew would be foreign not only in a religious but also in a social-economic sense. One of the main reasons for conflict were pogroms that took place in Ukraine and South Russia, of which one could learn from newspapers, letters, or rumours. Conflicts were also ignited by different interpretations of the Cabinet‘s decree, ratified by the tsar on May 3 1882, concerning the adjustment of the Jewish life and activities. The Jews, in turn, tried to protect themselves from the attacks by addressing their petitions and complaints to the authorities. There they would name the instigators of the riots and ask for protection from possible violence outbreaks. Nevertheless, the extent of Anti-Jewish riots in the North West region was significantly lower than in Southern Russia. This can be explained not only by the decisive action of the authorities but also by the economic “backwardness”“ of this region.
