ENThe first pipe organ at Salantai Church, a small five-voice positive, is mentioned in 1677. In the first half of the 18th century, an eight-voice instrument was built in the new Salantai Church. This organ underwent successive repairs - the most significant repair work was done in 1816 by Piotrowicz - and lasted into the end of the 19th century. In 1873 and subsequently, the documents of Salantai Church refer to an instrument of 16 voices, however, whether it was the old and enlarged instrument - or a new one transferred to Salantai from somewhere else remains unclear. This organ was dismantled together with the old wooden church when the current brick structure was built. With the construction of a new, brick church in Salantai at the beginning of the 20th century, there was a wish to install a new organ piece, yet it was only in 1936 when the funding was secured. It was agreed with the Czech organ builder Otto Kratokvil, who ran an organ workshop in Šiauliai to build a new ten-voice instrument. Yet numerous obstacles prevented this project from completion. After the war the instrument was repaired by J. Karaška, Kungys, Valužis, A. Remesa and others. In 1984, its pneumatic action tracking tubes system was replaced by electric action wire system. In 1998, a new register was added to the instrument, and a new, stylised facade was crafted. In the 19th century, the instrument at Salantai Church was played by the organists V. Mačernauskis, J. Šternas, L. Preibavičius, and in the 20th century, by P. Jablonskis, L. Stulginskas, V. Mikuta, P. Bučius, L. Dapšauskas, V. Tamašauskas, P. Pučkorius, and currently, by Lena Kaubrytė. Unfortunately, today the organ is hardly operational, it neither meets the requirements of professional organists nor is good for accompanying the liturgy. It is high time for Salantai community to think about acquiring a new instrument and to carry on the long-established tradition of organ playing. [From the publication]
