Summary / Abstract:

Reikšminiai žodžiai: Inovacijos; Istorinis Vilniaus centras; Istorinė rekonstrukcija; Kartotė; Kontekstualumas; Nauja architektūra istorinėje aplinkoje; Naujoji architektūra istorinėje aplinkoje; Naujovė; Pastatų pripildymas; Replikos; UNESCO Pasaulinio paveldo miestas; UNESCO pasaulio paveldo miestas; Vilniaus istorinis centras; Contextuality; Historical reconstruction; Infill buildings; Innovation; New architecture in a historic enviroment; New architecture in a historic environment; Replication; UNESCO World heritage city; Vilnius historical centre.

ENBuildings of new architecture in historical environment always are an outcome of the compromise between protection and innovation, tradition and creative work. Really successful solutions protect and strengthen the identity, integrity and local nature of the historical zone avoiding serious conflicts between protection and development. An issue of the integration of new buildings into historical environment becomes especially important in places with a certain protection level, for instance, in the territories of towns included into the UNESCO World Heritage List. Vilnius historical centre, a research object of the article, was included into the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1994. Recent changes of Vilnius old town which were taking place rapidly and many times may be taken as an example of restrictions applied by UNESCO to the world's heritage, protection of the town and intense development of the town in the capital of the country. Every process has its own priorities and requirements determined by a variety of realizable specific factors of creative work. They formed a full range between two opposite points of view: duplication and innovation. The article analyses an issue regarding urgent integration of new buildings into an urban architectural space of Vilnius historical centre. The main focus is on duplication and innovation as the main opposing trends and on current discussions between professionals and the society. The author not only names new forms established in the architectural space of Vilnius old town but discusses the context, concepts and the results of such practice as well.
