Summary / Abstract:

ENThe paper considers the theoretical aspect of intermedial research. It provides a resumptive view of the history of research and focuses on the approach of Werner Wolf and Irina O. Rajewsky. The examination of their conceptions reveals some problematic issues associated with current classification of intermedial relations, and inspires a discussion on the issue of the applicability of this classification to the practical analysis of intermedial phenomena. The latter appears to be the most important problem, since neither the existing typologies of intermediality, nor practical attempts at intermedial analysis offer a methodological background for proper analytical moves. The author of the paper finds a solution to the aforementioned problem in the field of intertextual research which is considered to be a starting point for the theoretical attempts to conceptualize intermedial relations. The investigation of interconnections between intermedial and intertextual research reveals that Gérard Genette’s map of transtextuality, designating "syntactical " relations between the texts, embraces all the modes of intermedial dialogue as defined by Woolf and Rajewsky: hypertextual relation embraces the processes of medial transposition, architextual relation covers the phenomena of media combination, and, finally, intertextual relation includes the intermedial references.Heinrich F. Plett’s map of intertextuality, introducing "morphological " criteria, in turn, delineates the formal peculiarities of transformations (quality, quantity, distribution, frequency, markers), the modes of intertextual/intermedial references, the patterns of transformation of the surface structure (addition, subtraction, substitution, permutation, complexities). Thus, it sanctions a possibility of outlining the significant shapes of the transformations of a deep structure. Both maps, inscribed into the conception of intertextuality which is based on the spatial idea of aesthetic communication (text – culture (texts of culture) – reader), offer a model of “grammar” providing the explorer of intermedial configurations with analytic tools.
