Summary / Abstract:

Reikšminiai žodžiai: Emigracija; Emigracija, euras, Europos Sąjunga, Lietuvos įvaizdis užsienyje, viešosios nuomonės apklausos; Euras; Europos Sąjunga (European Union); Lietuvos įvaizdis; Emigration; Emigration, euro, European Union, image of Lithuania abroad, Lithuania, public opinion surveys; Euro; European Union; Image of Lithuania abroad.

ENOn 10-11 May 2003, the absolute majority of the Lithuanian population voted in favour of Lithuania’s accession to the European Union (EU), and one year later, Lithuania became a full-fledged member state. Lithuania’s EU membership - one of the largest political projects that Lithuania has undertaken since re-establishing independence - stands out for its distinctive political, economic and legal features. Public opinion on the country’s EU membership is also a very important factor, as without public support, Lithuania would not have been able to become part of the Community. In today’s processes of European integration, decisions of any significance that may not be met with universal support are avoided; there is a constant effort to inform the public about the processes that are taking place. This article aims to reveal the change in public opinion on Lithuania’s European integration, stressing the key factors that led to the transformation of public opinion. It also attempts to discuss some of the problems related to the processes of European integration in Lithuania. Firstly, the article presents the differences in attitude of the Lithuanian population towards the EU before, during and after the 2003 referendum. Then the most important topics of EU-related public discourse are examined: awareness of European issues, emigration, identity, and introduction of the euro. The article discusses not only the attitude of the Lithuanian population towards the EU, but also the attitude of the citizens of select EU member states towards Lithuania. The analysis is largely based on data of representative surveys of the Lithuanian population carried out by the Vilmorus Market and Opinion Research Centre for the Lithuanian Government and the European Commission Representation.
