Summary / Abstract:

ENThe article discusses the main features using the images of the past in public life, also the models of cultures of memory and cultures of remembrance and their interface with the politics in Lithuania, Poland, Russia and Germany are analyzed. The culture of memory is viewed as continually emphasized images of the past and stories about the past through which the members of the society develop and strengthen their identity and define themselves as a distinct group. At the same time this past is used for the present and projected future plans. The culture of memory is directly linked with the society's identity and it is inevitably changing. Its content in a particular country is recognized by the dominant major ritualized narratives. Alongside with the culture of memory, currently prevailing in the particular country, the other - memory culture which functioned in earlier epochs and now lost its cultural-political relevance, but so far, has a strong impact on society in the present orientation, exists and it is called the culture of remembrance. The relation between the culture of memory and culture of remembrance may not necessarily be based on one another, they may oppose each other. This situation is particularly well-known in former communist bloc countries and societies. The examples of the states analyzed in this article show that at the center of the great narrative in these counties are events connected with the Second World War and the first postwar decade. Cultures of memory can be ascribed to a few types of cultural memory: in Poland's and Lithuania's culture of memory Victim aspect is emphasized, in Russia - Victory aspect and in Germany - Crime aspect. These typological differences affect the use of the past in the cross-border relations. [From the publication]
