Summary / Abstract:

Reikšminiai žodžiai: Atminimo kultūra; Atminties kultūra; Kolektyvinė atmintis; Mitas; Praeitis; Tautinis mitas; Tautinė tapatybė; Collective memory; Culture of memory; Culture of remembrance; Myth; National Identity; National myth; Past.

ENThe paper discusses the culture of memory and commemoration, describes the interrelations of four categories: the cultures of history, collective memory, memory and commemoration. The study presents Jan and Aleida Assmanns’ theory of cultural memory, which distinguishes between communicative and cultural memory. It describes the memory culture and its “construction” processes. The analysis of the problems of memory culture leads to a question regarding the relationship of collective images of the past and the memory culture. When resuming considerations about the relationship between the memory culture and collective memory, the author states that those countries which successfully pursue memory policy dictate the course for changes of collective and individual memory. Thus, the memory culture might be viewed as a certain combination of symbols and cultural codes, which has an explicit hierarchy. The content of memory culture is recognised from the master narrative, which has a myth sustaining programmed values in its centre. It is the most important medium of collective or political memory. The paper shows that the culture of memory and the culture of commemoration might be distinguished. The memory culture is not a stable mental construct; on the contrary, it is changeable. Dominant collective memories are influenced by current global processes which result in ceaseless discussions about the common European memory culture. The paper finishes with the discussion of the relationship of the memory culture and historical research.
