Recent Lithuanian immigrants in Chicago. Gendered strategies in pursuit of a legal status or "Barakudos Kobietos" and "Alfonsai"

LTStraipsnyje siekiama atskleisti, kaip vietinė emigrantų bendruomenė priima naujus emigrantus, šiems bandant legalizuotis svetimoje šalyje. Vienas iš būdų tapti legaliu emigrantu - vedybos su tos šalies piliečiu. Autorė nagrinėja dabartinių Lietuvos emigrantų patyrimą atvykus į Jungtines Amerikos valstijas ir jų įsiliejimą į Čikagos lietuvių bendruomenę. Pateikiama lietuvių emigracijos į Jungtines Amerikos valstijas istorija, aptariant svarbiausias emigracijos bangas: taip vadinamus grynorius, dypukus ir tarybukus. Siekiant atskleisti dabartinių emigrantų patyrimą, buvo atliktas etnografinis tyrimas, kuriame apklausti 69 naujai atvykę lietuviai (23 vyrai ir 46 moterys, 16-70 metų amžiaus) ir 20 amerikiečių kilmės lietuvių. Interviu analizė atskleidė "barakudos" ir "alfonso" fenomeną: tai moteris ar vyras, sudarantis santuoką su žymiai vyresniu partneriu ne iš meilės, o siekdamas tos šalies pilietybės ar aukštesnio socioekonominio statuso. Bendruomenės nariai skirtingai vertina tokį naujų emigrantų elgesį. Šių fenomenų pagrindu naujai atvykusiems emigrantams priskiriama tam tikra socialinė padėtis vietinėje etninėje bendruomenėje. Tyrimo duomenų analizė leidžia teigti, kad socialinis kontekstas, į kurį patenka naujai atvykę lietuviai, yra kompleksinis, pasižymintis sudėtingais socialiniais ryšiais tarp įvairių grupių ir bendruomenės narių anklavų.Reikšminiai žodžiai: Emigrantai (Diaspora); Lyties kategorijos; Lyčių santykiai; Vedybos; Emigrants; Gendr categories; Gender relations; Marriage.

ENThe article makes an attempt at revealing how the local emigrant communities accept new emigrants, as they try to make themselves legal in a foreign country. One of the ways of becoming a legal alien is a marriage with a citizen of the country. The author examines the experience of the present Lithuanian emigrants upon their arrival into the United States of America and their integration into Chicago’s Lithuanian community. The history of Lithuanians’ emigration to the United States of America is provided, discussing the major waves of emigration: the so called pures, displaced and Sovietics. For the purpose of revealing the experience of today’s emigrants, an ethnographic study was performed, during which 69 newcomers (23 males and 46 females, 16 – 70 years old) and 20 Lithuanians, born in the USA were interviewed. The interview revealed the phenomenon of the “barracuda” and “gigolo”: a man or a woman marries a significantly older partner for the purpose of obtaining the citizenship of the country or a higher socioeconomic status. The members of the community are of different opinions of such behaviour of the new emigrants. On the basis of the said phenomena the newcomers obtain a certain social status in the local ethnic community. The analysis of the data of the study provides reasons to state that the social context, in which the newcomer Lithuanians find themselves is complex and characterizes with complex social relations between different groups and enclaves of the community members.
