Summary / Abstract:

ENActive and amateur familiarity with music is usually practised in music lessons in comprehensive schools. A relevant topic is teaching of glees in music lessons. The main issue of the article is related to actualization of the continuation of early polyphonic music and rendering of traditions. Currently a live performance of glees is extinct. Therefore, music pedagogues (ethnomusicologists, ethnoinstrumentologists) who would perfectly know and would be able to render these traditions (peculiarities of the glee repertoire, work specifics, applied teaching methods, methodology in order to perform the glees in the most precise way without remoteness from the old tradition and distortion of its meaning) are especially needed. An object of the research is a role of glees in the students' ethnic education process. An aim of the article is to make an analysis of the situation of glee teaching in nowadays comprehensive schools; to determine the importance of glee teaching to the ethnocultural education of students and an attitude to glees as a way of ethnic culture education; to evaluate students' understanding about the need to teach them glees. The following methods were applied in the research: review of scientific methodical literature, generalisation and comparison of questionnaires. It was determined that while singing/performing glees the students became familiar with the heritage of ethnic culture, acquire complicated music skills such as singing in canon, syncope, and develop the sense of rhythm and polyphonic thinking. Although music teachers are interested in glees, they are not very popular during lessons. Students are quite formally familiarized with them, only as much as music education programmes require.
