Summary / Abstract:

Reikšminiai žodžiai: "nelengvas paveldas"; Istorinė atmintis; Lietuvos Didžioji Kunigaikštystė (LDK; Grand Duchy of Lithuania; GDL); Paveldas; Valdovų rūmai; Vilnius; "dissonant heritage"; Heritage; Historical memory; Kingdom palace; Palace of the Grand Duke of Lithuania; Vilnius.

ENThe article raises doubts as to the necessity of reconstruction of the Palace of the Grand Dukes. It is stated that as a result of differences in methodological positions, ideological views and the concept of cultural heritage, positions regarding the nature and purpose of the reconstruction Palace of the Grand Dukes diverged. It is noted that two opinions were expressed during debates, one of them being romantic traditionalist, seeing a state symbol in the Palace of the Grand Dukes; and liberal, opposing to reanimation of heritage and history. The author holds the view that it was necessary to include considerations about models of historical memory and their categorisation into discussions. It is observed that from the very idea of restoration of the Palace, the proponents regarded the Lower Castle as a symbol of not only the statehood of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, but also of the pagan Baltic culture. According to the author, the proponents of the restoration of the Palace of the Grand Dukes fail to take into account the fact that in 1994, Vilnius historical centre was included into the UNESCO World Heritage list, which obliges taking yet more serious approach towards interventions into the old-town. It is concluded that failing to find consensus during the debates, the issue of the reconstruction of the Palace of the Grand Dukes was solved at a political level. In the author’s opinion, final differences in positions regarding the Palace were determined not by different methodological or theoretical concepts, but by a dominant model of historical memory, stemming from the Romanticism period, and portraying the Palace of the Grand Dukes as a symbol of political power of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania.
