Summary / Abstract:

ENChildren’s status and experiences are frequent subjects of analysis in political, philosophical, historical, sociological, social work and other fields. Children’s experience related to partial labour migration of their parents has not been a focus of attention of researchers in Lithuania yet. The objective of the article is to reveal the impact of partial labour migration of parents on children’s experiences. The study is based on 25 case-studies carried out by the Institute of Family Relations in 2004–2005. During the study, data on the changing behaviour of children left by their parents to work abroad for long periods of time was collected. The account was taken of those families who were faced with partial labour migration, seen as a situation, when one of the parents goes to work abroad, while other family members stay in Lithuania. Though at the beginning of the study a hypothesis was formulated, stating that children left to be taken care by their grandparents were confronted with major problems, this proved to be wrong. Having analysed data collected during the survey it was confirmed that a quarter of the children in question were faced with short-term difficulties, after one of the parents had left for another country. However, contrary to previous assumptions, after one of the parents had left, children did not have problems of attachment. It was established that relations with other family members and constantly keeping in touch with the emigrated parent online can compensate for the absence of the parent.
