Summary / Abstract:

Rašytojos romanuose vaizduojamos moterys, augusios be tėvo, praradusios ryšį su motinomis, išgyvenančios nuolatinį kaltės jausmą. V. Juknaitė kūriniuose tęsia tradicinę idealios moters-motinos liniją ir tuo pačiu kalba apie sudėtingus, probleminius motinystės aspektus.Reikšminiai žodžiai: Idealios moters mitas; Moteris; Moterų proza; Motinystė; Motinystės reprezentacijos; Motinystės vaizdavimas; Šiuolaikinė lietuvių moterų proza; Šiuolaikinė lietuvių proza; Šiuolaikinė proza; Šventoji; Depiction of motherhood; Modern Lithuanian prose; Modern Lithuanian women's prose; Modern prose; Mother; Motherhood; Representations of motherhood; Saint; The myth of ideal woman; Women's prose.

ENThe article analyses motherhood as one of the key aspects of the feminine existence. The classical Lithuanian prose treats a woman as an object, while in the contemporary Lithuanian prose, written by women in particular, one can see a woman’s transformation from an object into a subject with an intrinsic value. The article focuses on the traditional myth of the Lithuanian literature, which embodies a triad, i.e., a woman – a mother – the holy one. Traditionally, an ideal woman is portrayed as making sacrifice, being ascetic and neglecting her own needs. However, this portrait excludes aspects of postpartum depression or moral dilemmas regarding woman’s controversial feelings about her infant. The contemporary prose offers a much more open and broader analysis of the bond between mother and child, different maternal experiences, as well as the experiences of women who fail to realise themselves as mothers. The article studies works of contemporary Lithuanian authors – Jurga Ivanauskaitė and Vanda Juknaitė – that portray motherhood as the only criterion of assessment, revealing woman’s psychological and social portrait and defining the entire course of development of the work. Patriarchal traditions deeply rooted in the Lithuanian literature formed a picture of an ideal woman, which corresponded to the myth of Penelope – a wife, a mother, and the protector of the family hearth. Jurga Ivanauskaitė highlighted the motherhood myth in the modern social context. Women portrayed in the author’s novels are those who were raised without a father, lost their bond with their mother, and constantly suffered from the feeling of guilt. Vanda Juknaitė continues a traditional line of an ideal woman-mother in her works, at the same time discussing complicated and problematic aspects of motherhood.
