Summary / Abstract:

Be to, morfodinaminius procesus iš dalies lėmė žmogaus veikla, todėl gamtos istorijos tyrimai gali būti naudingi dar ir žmogaus poveikio aplinkai studijoms.Reikšminiai žodžiai: Istoriniai žemėvaizdžiai; Reljefo kaita; Vilniaus miesto raida geologiniu aspektu; Vilnius; Geologic processes in Vilnius region; Historical terrain; Shift of relief; Vilius city.

ENThe terrains of the historical territories of Vilnius are characterised by a contrasting terrain in a comparatively compact territory. From the aspect of the terrain form there is an erosive ridge isolated by steep slopes (Sapieginė); terraced, cascading slopes formed by Neris and Vilnia, which create a natural amphitheatre (Old Town); plateau (Naujamiestis); Vilnia canyon (Paplauja with neighbouring Rasos and Užupis); from the south and the west, the city is surrounded by moraine highland. Such diversity provided the different spaces of the city with various attributes suitable for defence, production, accommodation, communication, control, etc. This diversity of forms creates a permanent fabric of “specialised segments”, which allows a gradual population of separate areas (according to the priorities of a given time period). This distinguishes Vilnius geomorphological conditions among other surrounding areas (Neris and Vilnia basins). Natural environment might have possibly been one of the factors that determined the establishment of the city centre in this particular location. Studies of the historical terrain help to more deeply understand the birth of the city and the formation of the urban structure, and to trace what has not been recorded in the historical sources or found by archaeologists. It should also be noted that the terrain in Vilnius was a rather dynamic system and many of its elements have radically changed during the city’s existence. This means that not everything may be judged looking at the current terrain. Moreover, morphodynamic processes were partially determined by human activity, thus the research of the history of nature may also be useful for the studies of human impact on the environment.
