LTInžinerijos anglų kalbos formaliojo ugdymo(si) tikslai tradiciškai krypsta į tekstų profesine tematika skaitymą ir analizavimą bei inžinerinės terminijos mokymą(si). Gebėjimas bendrauti žodžiu dažnai yra atskiriamas nuo profesijos reikmėms skirtos inžinerijos anglų kalbos kompetencijos. Atliktas tyrimas parodė šio gebėjimo aktualumą ir plėtros poreikį rengiant specialistus kolegijose.
ENEngineering English by its functions and expression belongs to a sub-category of English for specific purposes and is characterized by specific lexis and specific discourse. Traditionally this type of language variety is identified with engineering related and engineering based texts, i.e. abilities to understand written information, reading and comprehension. Supporting this attitude, the purpose and education objectives of Professional English are frequently associated only with these language abilities. However, ability to communicate orally becomes relevant not only in the situations of social interpersonal communication but in the professional environment as well. According to its content and functions, ability to communicate orally in English coincides with the key skills of communication in the mother tongue – it is based on the ability to understand, expressand interpret information. The accomplished qualitative Person's Individual Experience Research based on content analysis method helped to reveal the attitude of 12 specialists of engineering professions towards the experience of application of oral communication ability. On the basis of their individual experience, participants of the research identified the follqwing abilities of engineering English essential for their professional activity: understand written information, understand oral information and communicate orally in professional situations.During the interview the participants positively evaluated the results of ability to understand written information and ability to understand and use professional lexis which they acquired during their studies. However, ability to communicate orally is defined as insufficiently formulated and poorly developed. The present evaluation of the results of their achievements emphasizes the relevance of oral communication ability in professional environment and supports the idea of giving appropriate attention for its development on the formal level. The material obtained during the research allows drawing the conclusions that this ability is relevant for successful solution of problems in professional environment, but the development results of this ability achieved in the course of formal education are negative. It is recommended to pay appropriate attention to the development of oral communication ability in professional environment while implementing studies of Engineering English at institutions of higher non-university education. Relying on their studies of English and the experience reflection of formal learning at colleges, participants of the research distinguished recommended groups of syllabus objectives of Engineering English: to be able to understand written information, to understand and use professional lexis, to communicate orally.
