Summary / Abstract:

LTStraipsnio tikslas – pateikti XVI – XVII a.

ENThe article is aimed at presenting the picture of social and cultural history of the town of Biržai and its dwellers. The author chose the centre of Biržai principality of Biržai – Dubingiai Radziwiłł holding – the town of Biržai and its dwellers as the object of investigation. The following goals are set in the article: to establish the legal standing of the town dwellers in communicating with the Radziwiłł, owners of the holding, to elucidate the mechanism of functioning of conscription, relations between the town and the estate through the town dwellers and the craftsmen’s joining the rural environment, the importance of Riga Port to the development of economic activities of the town dwellers of Biržai. At that time town dwellers of Biržai represented the urban environment of the society of Biržai principality who were subordinate to the magistracy (town dwellers) and the residents of four small towns (Salamiestis, Saločiai Nemunėlio Radviliškis and Papilys), which earlier were in the principality. Biržai principality defined the legal standing of the town dweller not only by the privilege of self-rule but also by letters of instructions regularly issued by the Radziwiłł to the town. During the period under discussion the town dwellers of Biržai had military service related to the needs of the castle – building, maintenance of the castle, transformation of ammunition, digging of dykes, keeping guard. Taking into account the environment of town dwellers of North Lithuania, the author states that there are still issues in their history that have not been investigated yet. Only after thorough investigations will it be possible to describe the history of towns and town dwellers.
