LT1928–1932 m. Paryžiuje rašytą dienoraštį, stambiausią aktorės, režisierės Unės Babickaitės-Graičiūnienės-Baye rašytinį palikimą, būtų galima priskirti ir journal intime, ir išorinį pasaulį aprašančios, jį stebinčios amžininkės liudijimo apie savo epochą tipui. Trisdešimties sulaukusi lietuvių menininkė dienoraštyje įamžino išskirtinį savo gyvenimo etapą, kai siekė užkariauti Paryžiaus teatro sceną, pateikė to meto Paryžiaus meno ir aukštuomenės pasaulio paveikslą.
ENThe diary, written in Paris from 1928 to 1932, is the biggest and the most significant written legacy of the Lithuanian actress and director, Unė Babickaitė Graičiūnienė-Baye. Nevertheless, it has received very little attention, with the majority of the studies limited to depictions of the artist’s colorful and adventurous life and her charismatic personality. Babickaitė-Graičiūnienė-Baye’s diary could be classified as both a journal intime and a type of testimony of her epoch. In her diary, she captured an exceptional phase of her life as she sought to establish herself on the Parisian theater stage, painting a picture of the Parisian world of artists and the high society of the time. The author of the diary is a woman in her thirties on a professional and personal quest. Babickaitė-Graičiūnienė-Baye’s diary is a woman’s conversation with her light and dark versions of self, constantly oscillating between domesticity, the world’s insignificance and ugliness, her own inferiority and the desire for a meaningful existence, between the soul’s disability and its daring aspirations in search of the “mythological Troy.” The author, who was unconventional and at the same time, surprisingly conventional, even puritan and often categorical in her attempts to understand and explain herself, delved into her inner self, identifying her weaknesses and traits that needed to be corrected, as well as into her surroundings and the role and place of women in twentieth-century society. This egodocument attests to Babickaitė-Graičiūnienė-Baye’s evolution, progress, and constant desire to educate and improve herself. Keywords: Unė Babickaitė-Graičiūnienė, Une Baye, diary, egodocument, women’s self-perception.
