ENThis monograph written by five historians of the younger generation analyses the history of Christianity in Lithuania in the general context of the Baltic region and Eastern Europe. The book consists of five sections which discuss peripeteias of Lithuania’s joining the Christian world in 1009–1387, problems of establishment of Christianity after the Christianisation from the end of the 14th century to the fist half of the 16th centuries, church reforms in 1555–1655, establishment of Christianity and the period of religious stability in 1655–1740. The book also analyses the history of Catholicism in the 18th century, the situation of the Catholic Church during the ruling of the tsar of Russia and the situation of Christianity in Lithuania in the 20th century. The book does not concentrate all its attention on the establishment of Catholicism and its significance in various periods. It devotes a great deal of attention to the situation of uniates, protestants, Orthodox and Jews in Lithuania especially with regard to political situations in the state. The book newly analyses the story of Bruno of Querfurt and his efforts to spread Christianity. Vilnius and Samogitian dioceses and the spreading network of parishes in Lithuania are also analysed. The book draws the reader’s attention to the fact that Catholic and Protestant reforms influenced the orthodoxies, analyses peculiarities of the Russification imposed by the Russian tsar and the role and status of Catholicism in the interwar period, the Soviet period and the after the restoration of independence of Lithuania.
