Summary / Abstract:

ENArtistic culture in the territory of the Great Duchy of Lithuania was treated in various respects: as an object of patronizing activity, as a territory of financial investments or as the memorial instrument of a family. Only after the establishment of the Department of Architecture in 1793, and later on the departments of painting, sculpture and engraving, did the status of artistic creation begin to attain a wider context of creation and critical estimation. Meanwhile, the tradition of art (architecture, painting, theatre, music) criticism in the 2nd half of the 18th century was quite chaotic and unstable. The first publication most related to these subjects was the book written by the referendary of the GDL, Povilas Ksaveras Bzostovskis - "The Most Prominent Churches and Paintings in Rome and Some of the Towns of Italy, Germany, France and Poland" . This book appeared in Vilnius in the year 1811. This publication quite thoroughly reveals the relation between the intellectual mentality of the GDL and artistic creation and its objects. This book was an example of a new literary genre that continued the tradition of travel diaries written in the 16th century by Jurgis Radvila "The Journey to Italy", and Mikalojus Radvila Našlaitėlis "The Journey to the Saint Land, Syria and Egypt". It was the first travel guide in which the most significant monuments of architecture were named and the names of the prominent European artists (architects, sculptors, painters) were mentioned alongside the titles of their works. This work by Povilas Ksaveras Bzostovskis is interesting as an example of the application of an evaluating and analytic attitude towards artistic creation in Lithuania; its lexis and interests reveal the rather conservative attitude of the educated nobleman towards art and creation, one that was lacking in internal development. The interpretations of artistic and architectural monuments given by P. K. Bzostovskis are not distinguished by originality. The works that were given distinction by the author show that he was a typical intellectual of the classicistic orientation of the end of the 18th century and the beginning of the 19th century; an intellectual who valued only publicly accepted works of architecture and art.
