ENThe utilization of sources that are little known or have not been included in scientific circulation until now has become a rather important endeavor when investigating the heritage of Lithuanian estates. Failing the documentary material (for example, inventories), an important source of information for the investigations of the culture o f estates would be the surviving memoirs of contemporaries, in which the details of the Manor House and its belongings, which are now completely lost, are recorded. In this respect, the Dūkštas Estate (the region of Ignalina) is very useful because of these surviving reminiscences which were written at different times by very few people. In these memoirs we can find valuable information about the everyday life of Dūkštas and other estates during the 19th and 20th centuries. In this article, reference was made to the published sources: the memoirs by Elzbieta Rudaminaitė {Pamiętniki Elžbiety z Rudominow Pakoszowej) published in Kronika rodzinna in 1881, the periodical published in Warsaw, and two books of conversations with the last owners of Dūkštas which were published at the end of the 20th century (Wisniewski W , Ostatni z rodu. Rozmowy z Tomaszem Zanem, Warszawa-Paryž, 1989; Wisniewski W , Pani na Berzenikach, Londyn, 1991). The material of these sources was revised by making reference to other written and published sources and the material of this investigation. First of all, the aim was to gather and revise information registered in the memoirs about the buildings of the estate, the functions of the premises and its equipment, also the pieces of art or other collections that were there before. The article corrects the alternation of the owners of the estate and their biographical facts. These facts might be valuable for further investigations into the evolution of this complex, including its reconstructions and repairs. It is ascertained that the frequent propositions made in literature regarding the coherence among Dūkštas and the philomath Tomas Žanas, and the poet Adomas Mickevičius (Adam Mickiewicz) have no foundation. There are no records made in the memoirs about these persons visiting Dūkštas. The Dūkštas Estate only began to be associated with these famous names at the beginning of the 20th century, during the rule of Francūzovičiai ir Žanai. The personalities of all the philomaths and A. Mickevičius had already become legend by the time Dūkštas pretended to become the depository of their memory. The article presents information about the library that was collected in Dūkštas and Gerkonys at the beginning of the 20th century. This library was related to the life and creation of A. Mickevičius and other signs of his memory. The article analyses the relationships among the owners of Dūkštas and the prominent musicians of the early 20th century (Emilis Mlynarskis, Karolis Simanovskis and others). The contemporary painters who visited the estate are also mentioned in this article. The gathered material could be a foundation for further investigations into Dūkštas; the seedbed of the culture of the estates. [From the publication]
