Summary / Abstract:

Reikšminiai žodžiai: Dvikalbystė; Gimtasis kraštas; Lenkijos lietuvių bendruomenė; Lenkijos lietuvių visuomenė; Punsko šnekta; Bilingualism; Home land; Lithuanian community in Poland; Lithuanian subdialect of Punsk; Punsk dialect; The Lithuanian language.

ENThe article discusses the importance of the native language in the life of the Lithuanian community residing in the region of Puńsk-Sejny while fostering and maintaining the national identity and a bond with the native region and Lithuania. The region of Puńsk-Sejny is situated right next to the Polish-Lithuanian borderland in Podlaskie Voivodeship. Although separated from Lithuania with the state border, people living in the region have preserved their language and the Lithuanian spirit. Lithuanian is used at home as well as in churches and schools. Books and periodical press are published in the region, as well as radio and TV programmes are broadcasted. Crosses, monuments and gravestones also have Lithuanian inscriptions on them. As the data of Poland’s population census of 2002 states, only 5846 people called themselves Lithuanians across Poland. Despite the running time and changing conditions of life, the Lithuanian language is always alive in the region of Puńsk-Sejny. Local Lithuanians consider it to be the key characteristic of their national self-awareness, which is always respected and valued, and expressed through words, written language, songs and chants. Although, Lithuanian minorities living in Poland next to the state border of the Republic of Lithuania show huge respect to their native language, the question as to how long this decaying area, where the Lithuanian language is spoken, will exist stays open. The factors determining the decrease of the Lithuanian-spoken area are related to the political and economic as well as the geographic condition of the country. It is, first of all, the Slavic environment surrounding the region from the west and east. i.e. the influence of the Polish language, the growing emigration and assimilation.
