Summary / Abstract:

ENArticle elucidates the 1920-1926 reforms of the only nuns abbey still active in Kaunas after the repressions of the tsarist authorities. At the beginning of the period it was an enclosed abbey, in which spiritual readings, prayers, canticles, sermons and etc. were passed in Polish. The Polish character of the abbey provoked the authorities of the Lithuanian Catholic Church to start the Lithuanisation of the convent. Only after four years of tough struggle in which even papal legates were involved, 10 Polish Benedictine nuns were transferred from Kaunas to Kolainiai and abbey was opened for Lithuanian nuns. Such fate of Polish nuns was determined by the political and social conditions and national tensions of the period. The rule of the abbey was reformed in 1926 when the archbishop Bl. Jurgis Matulaitis MIC transformed the hitherto enclosed community into an active diocesan congregation. The necessity of the reform was determined by the "signs of times", as the estate of aristocracy and gentry which established and maintained convents, lost its privileges, wealth and importance during repressions, revolutions and wars. Moreover, radical reforms of the land and capital property which were carried out after the World War I directly affected the property of the Church. Enclosed abbeys became too heavy a burden for the Church, especially in Lithuania. Reform gave a boost to the growth of a new Benedictine Congregation, but after its implementation the last historical enclosed nuns abbey in Lithuania ceased to exist. [text from author]
