Summary / Abstract:

ENThe phenomenon of suicide is considered to be one of the problems of public health. This phenomenon attracts a great deal of attention both at the national and European Union’s level. Irrespective of the fact that the number of suicides in Lithuania has been rather stable since 1990, it is still one of the highest in Europe. Although Lithuania has paid a great deal of attention to such issues as the spread of suicides as well as external and psychological factors influencing it, aspects in respect of methods of suicides have been little analysed. This article seeks to analyse suicides by hanging, compare it with other methods of suicide, to reveal its social and demographic features, and present the analysis of development of the phenomenon in 1933–1997 and 1998–2002. In the course of the investigation, data of the Department of Statistics on suicides were analysed by gender, age, place of residence, education and family status. The results of the research revealed that in 1998–2002, hanging was the most frequent method for committing a suicide, and starting from 1993, the share of this method was growing with regard to other methods of suicide. It can also be concluded that the choice of this method of suicide was mostly determined by gender, education and place of residence, whereas age and family status had little or no impact at all. The revealed results of the research can help in the implementation of suicide prevention with regard to lower education, social and psychological situation of rural residents and men.
