Summary / Abstract:

ENArchaeological wood as a material may be analysed and provide historical information in two aspects: 1) it may be viewed as a raw material necessary for human articles, the processing and use whereof enables judging about the development of technological solutions; 2) it is a biological object, i.e. the result of the growth of a live tree, physiological activities and response to the changing environment. Therefore, although wooden finds are not as informative from the typological point of view as, for example, pottery, the anatomical analysis of wood may provide information about the living conditions and behaviour of people. The examination of wood of 305 piles from Žemaitiškė 2nd settlement established that more than half of them (57.1%) were made from ash tree. Other more common deciduous tree species were alder (11.3%), hazel (10.0%), elm (5.3%), and maple (4.3%). These species correspond to the flora of the broad-leaved forests of the Atlantic period. Oak wood was practically not used; only one pile was found. Pine tree, which differs from the mentioned deciduous trees in growth conditions, was used in 6.0% of the piles. One of these piles was dated by a carbon dating method to the Boreal period, when pines prevailed in forests. The established range of tree species and carbon dates of different wood piles show that the structures of the settlement do not belong to the same time period; they were built during different geological periods of the Holocene epoch and reflect a different composition of tree species in forests. Wood for the construction of the pile structures of the settlement was mainly cut in spring and summer. Construction works most probably took place immediately after wood was processed, i.e. in summer, when the lake water was warm.
