Summary / Abstract:

LT2000 Šventaisiais Jubiliejiniais metais Šventasis Tėvas Jonas Paulius II paragino surinkti medžiagą apie XX a. tikėjimo liudytojus kankinius. Reikšminiai žodžiai: Barbora Žagarietė; Stebuklų knyga; Barbora Žagarietė; Book of miracles.

ENA book which was collected by the order of the Bishop Motiejus Valančius in 1860 the parish of Senoji Žagarė. This book contains the registrations about the blessings which were received by the intercession of the martyr of chastity of the XVII century Barbora Umianskauskaitė. In the book we can find the facsimile and the Lithuanian translation. A brief biography of Barbora Umianskauskaitė and a history of the national worship of her personality are presented. Also there is a discussion about the fact of the demolition of her relics during the soviet period. [From the publication]In the Holy Anniversary Year 2000 Pope John Paul II encouraged collecting of the materials on the martyrs, who witnessed the faith in the 20th century. On 26 December, 1999 276 members of the parish of Žagarė applied to Šiauliai bishop Eugenijus Bartulis with the request to take case that Barbora Žagarietė Umiastauskaitė (1628 - 1648), who had been long known as a blessed person, is officially beatified. It is speculated that Barbora was progeny of the local nobles. She was deeply religious from childhood. Secretly from her father she was engaged in charity, helped the sick and harmed bondmen. She entered the Benedictine convent in Riga however later she had to leave it and return to her family either due to poor health or due to her family’s continuous dissatisfaction with her choices. Being twenty years of age, in order to protect herself against the intentions of her father, she jumped out of the second floor and died. During the times of Motiejus Valančius the book of registration of the miracles, which occurred by patronage of Barbora Žagarietė was commenced to be complied. The study provides an overview of the historiography, relating to Barbora Umiastauskaite, the history of preservation and protection of her ashes, the aspects of her cult and publishes the book of registration of the miracles, which occurred by patronage of Barbora Žagarietė, found by attempts of priest Boleslovas Babrauskas SJ.
