Summary / Abstract:

LTGiesmių giesmė į lietuvių raštiją įžengė su Bretkūno Biblijos vertimu, pradėtu 1579 m. Kaip šiuolaikinių lietuviškų Biblijos, taigi ir Giesmių giesmės, vertimų pirmtakas prisimenamas Juozapo Skvirecko vertimas. Vis dėlto jis turėjo keistas ištakas – iki šiol žodžio galia stebinančio poeto ir vis iš naujo atrandamo iškilaus kalbininko Antano Baranausko didžiausią gyvenimo nesėkmę. Kai vyskupas Antanas Baranauskas ėmėsi versti Šventąjį Raštą, tikrasis biblinių mokslų perversmas dar tik brendo. Užteko laikytis prieš pora-trejetą dešimtmečių išmoktų dalykų, kad nepajustum nei protestantiškojo „racionalizmo“, nei katalikiškoji „modernizmo“ įtakų. Biblijos vertimo 1901 m.

ENThe Song of Songs was introduced into Lithuanian literature together with the translation of the Holy Bible by Bretkūnas, commenced in 1579. As in case of modern translations of the Holy Bible and the Song of Songs into Lithuanian, the precursor of the translations is considered to be the translation by Juozapas Skvireckas. Nevertheless, the real precursor was rather strange – it was the biggest failure of Antanas Baranauskas, a poet, still able to astonish with his mighty syllable and a prominent linguist, who is continuously rediscovered. When bishop Antanas Baranauskas undertook to translate the Holy Scripture, the true revolution of Biblical studies was only in the process of incubation. To avoid the feeling of the influence of the Protestant “rationalism” or Catholic “modernism”, it was sufficient to observe the aspects, learned two-three decades before. Baranauskas undertook to translate the Holy Bible in 1901 with a strong belief that the abolition of the ban of Lithuanian print is at hand. Commencing this monumental labour he wished for the readiness to freedom of the nation and the Church. The younger generation of priests of the beginning of the 20th century, which was nurtured in a different intellectual environment, almost unanimously rejected the Seinai bishop’s translation. The started work was impossible to be completed both due to the changed concept of the translation and the advancement of the studies of the Holy Scripture. Seemingly, Baranauskas’s translation was highly influenced by his belief that Lithuanian and Latin syntax is, in essence, the same and pursuance of his own orthography without regard to any new trends. Baranauskas has also been post mortem reproached due to his choice of the irrelevant comments by Menochio. According to the author, when searching for the answer “what” was translated by Baranauskas and “how”, the question remains why this aged translation is still worth reading. The apocryphal letter b.
