Summary / Abstract:

ENThe theory of diffusion is one of the main theories in geography. Since the middle of the 20th century the science of geography accumulated a significant amount of experience in studying of diffusion of culture and created a methodological basis for the studies. Diffusion of culture in geography is most frequently identified with the process of dissemination of innovations on a territory. Several main directions for researches were identified, i. e. the analysis of the influence of the territory and geographical environment on the process of diffusion, attempts to evaluate the significance of distance, the effect of neighbourship, physical, cultural and political barriers, studies of directions, trajectories, channels, origins and territories of dissemination of culture. An insignificant amount of special studies of diffusion has been performed in Lithuania therefore one could state that the studies of diffusion of special culture in Lithuania are new and promising not only in terms of cognition, they also have a significant applied significance since they integrate the knowledge of most sciences (geography, sociology, history, psychology, culturology, etc). The geographical situation is also important in the process of diffusion of culture. Geographically Lithuania was in the zone of intersection of three competing cultures of Christianity – the Northwestern (the Protestantism), the Southwestern (the Catholicism) and the Eastern (the Orthodoxy). Due to the contractual periphery of Lithuania different forms of synthesis of the said cultures came into existence. However one should not be surprised that Lithuania remained a cultural periphery, in which most innovations (i. e. statehood, the Baptism, styles of architecture, social and economic relations, urbanization and industrialization, forms of farming, etc.) were introduced with a delay.
