Summary / Abstract:

Reikšminiai žodžiai: Intonavimas; žemaičių dainos; Glissando; Vibrato; Dermė; Intonation; Songs of Samogitia; Glissando; Vibrato; Tune.

ENTwo aspects of intonation in Samogitian (Western Lithuanian) songs are analyzed: glissando and musical scale. The sample contains seven songs recorded from seven Samogitian singers in 1930s. Most pronounced glissandi are observed in the intonations of the fifth scale degree. The typical fifth intonation, in ascending sequences, is made of two stages: fast glissando (appogiatura-type glissando; pitch change of approximately 4 semitones, and duration 0.13 s, on average) and the succeeding slightly gliding intonation of the structural note itself (intratonal glissando; approximately 0.8 semitones and 0.46 s, on average). Most probably, the glissandi in fifth play cognitive role: they stress the modal significance of the fifth degree. The acoustically and cognitively based conclusion is in good agreement with the conclusions of the previous structural-ethnomusicological studies on the specific role of the fifth degree in Samogitian songs. Pitch measurements show that the musical scales are quite scattered among the singers. The scale generalized across the seven singers deviates noticeably from equal temperament. The third and fourth degrees in the pentachord containing the degrees from the first to the fifth differ in pitch from 12ET the most; the third being roughly 20 cents flat and the fourth being roughly 20 cents sharp. The most stable scalar structure, when comparing medians of scale degrees of the seven performances, is trichord made of the second, third, and fifth. The most stable scalar structure, in a sense of separate performance, is tonic trichord (first, third, and fifth degrees), i.e., pitches of occurrences of the corresponding degrees show the smallest deviations, for separate melostrophes.
