Summary / Abstract:

ENThe life pulsating society changes the concepts of “limits”. Space, land and time remain important for perception of identity. The article aims at revealing the following: first, how people comprehend their identity, which actions determine their exclusiveness and what defines their local “limits”, second, which are the “symbols” of the identity, which remain in the modernization processes. Throughout the history Lithuanians more than once have proven their fidelity and love for their nation and land, which, saturated with romantic ideas, as Antano Baranauskas’s “Anykščių šilelis” remains a “symbol” in the definitions of the modern identity of an upper Lithuanian. The study evidenced that the new “objects”, i. e. the new labour, new capital structures and investments with new sources of information, touch upon the “subjects”, who have a better education. The process of gapping the “time and space” in the province happens differently among younger and older persons. The said process is influenced by the leaving of young people from the ranks of peasants, i. e. from the periphery. Their migration and striving for education evidences that the people’s choice is increasing and becoming freer and the cognition of people undergoes essential changes compared with the traditional society. The regional concept of identity has remained in Lithuania: the Upper Lithuanians say that they are all from the same village. However upon getting deeper into the worldview of people of different age and education, definitions of “self” and interest, it becomes obvious that the “de-traditionalization” processes are sufficiently advanced and the symbols of ethnicity become “empty”, i. e. lose their meanings, which were available in the traditional community.
