Summary / Abstract:

ENThis chapter deals with the representation of return migration in the Lithuanian media and Lithuanian emigrant social media. Media is a source of images and representations about former emigrants, and therefore is important to study in several respects. In most general terms, such study shows the perception of return migration in the media, which can indirectly inform us about the appreciation of the act of return and possible social remittances in the home country, in terms of whether they are they seen and acknowledged. Consequently, media can act as a social factor of return. Positive representations of return migration can encourage social remittances, since the presentation of returning migrants demonstrates to other emigrants that their return is appreciated and welcomed. While the conventional media is important because of the representation of return migration for the wider society, social media has the potential to connect emigrants and return migrants. The internet, and social media in particular, function as a structure for emigrant networks, as a means of retaining homeland identities and of maintaining transnational relationships with the country of origin (Kissau and Hunger 2010), which is important since maintaining a relationship with the homeland and within the disapora is believed to make the return more likely, and/or to foster remittances and collaborations with the home country.
