Summary / Abstract:

ENThe article presents Bishop of Smolensk Bogusław Korwin Gosiewski (1669–1744). The author argues that, contrary to the prevailing number of studies, he was not the son of Field Hetman of Lithuania Wincenty Gosiewski and Magdalena née Konopacka, but of Maciej Gosiewski, a general of Lithuanian artillery, and Małgorzata née Szwab. Bogusław Korwin Gosiewski was born at the turn of November 1669 at Lazdijai (Polish: Łoździeje). In 1692, he was ordained priest and appointed the parish priest in Oshmyany (Oszmiana) and Anykščiai (Onikszty). Before 1700, he became a cantor of the Vilnius cathedral, in 1709, a custodian of the chapter, and in 1714, its dean. From 1720 on, he was the Great Scribe of Lithuania. He also was elected a deputy to the Sejm several times. In 1722, he became the titular bishop of Akanthos and suffragan of White Ruthenia, and in 1725, the bishop of the Smolensk diocese. In 1729, he expected to receive the Vilnius diocese, but he was not appointed to it. Furthermore, from 1729 to 1733, he cooperated with the French court to break the sessions of the Sejm. Before his death, he founded a hospital in Vilnius at Sawicz Street. He died on 23 June 1744 and was buried in the Church of the Ascension of Our Lord in Vilnius. Keywords: Gosiewski family, Vilnius diocese, Smolensk diocese, Vilnius, Sawicz hospital.
