ENIn this article, based on the material of the official correspondence of the Vilnius voivode Mikolaj Krzysztof Radziwill “Sierotka”, an analysis was made of which nobility assemblies had the authority and actually made the selection of court ushers in the powiats of the Vilnius voivodeship in 1604–1616. The analysis showed that in almost half of the cases, the selection was made at the assizes (trzykrolskie, trojeckie and michalowskie), but almost as often – at the sejmiks (pre-sejm, deputy and other). The conclusions of the analysis force us to raise important theoretical questions about the essence and legal character of the county nobility community and its legal culture. Keywords: The Grand Duchy of Lithuania, Vilnius voivodship, nobility, court ushers, sejmiks, assizes.
