Summary / Abstract:

Darbo tikslai – aptarti kitataučių traktavimą XIX a. pabaigos – XX a.

ENThis dissertation is devoted to bringing to light the image of other ethnicities in Lithuanian folklore. What is researched is how much these images fit reality, i.e. the attitudes and behaviour of Lithuanian peasants with other ethnicities, the way of life of other ethnicities, and historical facts, explaining what influences the divergences from this reality. The aims of this work is to discuss the handling of other ethnicities in Lithuanian culture from the end of the 19th century to the first half of the 20th century, mostly found in folklore, and clarify what aspects of otherness are most noticeable, recognise the content of these characters, the artistic expression of their image, and in general the societal meaning during a few hundred years. The tasks were to: reveal the specific aspects of the characters in Lithuanian folklore that were chosen for the research; determine the territorial distribution of the existence of each ethnic nationality in folk work and customs; clarify in which kinds of folk song genres other ethnicities find themselves in, and how much influence the canons of separate genres have in the handling of them; discuss the custom of disguising oneself, and research why other ethnicities appear among the masks of others in disguise, and how and what they affect during every celebration. We attempt to examine the national originality of these figures, and their representation in our tradition. We are concerned with how a person of one ethnicity is differentiated from another of another ethnicity, and what influenced this process. The methods used are the following: historical-comparative, interpretive, and structural methods are used.
