Summary / Abstract:

ENThe article, referring to theoretic insights and data of empirical studies, provides the analysis of relations between violent computer games and aggressive behaviour of children and adolescents. The spread of computer games, the age and sex differences are discussed, the effects, brought by violence related media are revealed: activation and development of the aggressive thoughts’ network, weakening of attenuation of aggressive reactions and justification of aggression, modelling effects, reduced sensitivity and the changed worldview. In order to answer the question whether the violent games do encourage aggression, the studies, empirically evaluating the relations between children’s and adolescents’ games and aggressive behaviour are analyzed, the factors, able to increase the aggression are described. The article provides a thorough discussion why violent computer games are able to bring to the players a greater influence than other forms of violence related media. Although there is a lack of empirical studies, the larger part of the studies data provides the reasons to believe that violent computer games are related (at least by short-time relations) to children’s and adolescents’ aggressive thoughts, negative emotional experience and aggressive response, as well as to less frequent display of the pro-social behaviour. Certain children may be more sensitive to the negative influence of violent computer games than others. It could be stated that the effects of display of aggression by viewers or players are determined by combinations of different influences, moreover, violent shows or games may bring different reactions in a person. Referring to the data of the research, recommendations are provided.
